Handling of construction materials

Within the wide spectrum of materials and inputs that are used in the construction sector, some that require special care and handling are identified in order to guarantee their conservation and avoid losses. In this way, the logistical management that is given, becomes a fundamental aspect to guarantee not falling into cost overruns or inefficiencies.

Storage activity planning. For this, it is not only essential to have a suitable space to store the supplies, but also to designate a person to manage it and be in charge of carrying out the distribution. It is necessary to know with a high degree of confidence, how much stock of materials is available to be able to request orders and plan the progress of the works.

In general, in many constructions it is decided to set aside a space to have sand, cement packages, rods and tools, among other elements; regardless of weather conditions.

Construction materials are those stone products that are generally exploited in mines and quarries. They are listed among these, concrete, mortar, paving, rods, drag materials such as gravel, sand, stones, etc. Next, we will list some of the ideal management during the different stages:

Upload and download

In addition to space, it requires personnel to coordinate the unloading of materials at a specific point in the construction.

One of the recommendations that is frequently given is to moisten the materials that could release dust when loaded or unloaded, such as gravel or stones.

Likewise, in most cases, it is requested that this type of material, usually transported in dump trucks, be covered with tarpaulins to prevent it from falling onto the tracks or affecting people during its transfer.

Meanwhile, when it comes to the entry of cement mixers (mixers), it is also required that vehicle operators clean, even superficially, the vehicle before leaving the work site so that it does not drag waste towards the outer pathways.

Storage

When it comes to aggregates, they must be temporarily stored in warehouses or collection places that have good signage and, in addition, they must be covered with tarpaulins or polyurethane to minimize the probability that the smallest particles will go into the air or arrive to water sources and contaminate them.

It is mentioned that when the materials are distributed in bags, such as cement, they must be stored in places that have good ventilation, are free of humidity or the possibility of them getting wet (isolated from the ground), generally placed on wooden platforms or pallets and that do not pile up at heights beyond 6 meters to avoid accidents.

Likewise, once the bags or sacks have been used, they must be stored, if possible hermetically, until they can be disposed of correctly.

In the case of prefabricated materials such as bricks or tubes, they must be located in specific places that are safe and do not interfere with the mobility of the people who are on site; while the rods, for example, must be arranged on supports for this purpose, and be covered so that they are protected from oxidation caused by rain.
